It was a sad day at our house; well at least to me it was sad. We had to clean out the deep freeze in anticipation of a half side of beef and that meant throwing away (gasp, yes, throwing away) my frozen breastmilk stash. This was extra milk that I stored just in case something happened to my milk supply and Reagan needed it.
I’d stopped saving breastmilk quite a while ago, probably back in February or March because Reagan was old enough to not need the extra and I was still producing more than enough fresh milk for her. I kept thinking about donating it, but I wasn’t sure exactly how or where to do this, so it sat. And sat. And sat. And now most of it is over a year old – way past it’s expiration – and it was time to throw it out.
Luckily I had a great little helper who emptied almost the entire bottom shelf by herself! I got the middle shelf and she did the bottom one!
It felt pretty sad to see so much milk go to waste and now I also wish I would have taken the time to mark down just how much I had saved. Each bag was anywhere from 4-6 oz and let me tell you there were a LOT of bags, at least 50-75, which means even a low estimate of 4oz X 50 bags would be 200oz of breastmilk that I’d saved! What a waste and if I was able to do it again I would definitely make an effort to find some place (or someone) to donate it to. Just check out my healthy, sturdy (aka she was a chunky monkey when she was an infant), amazingly intelligent baby girl girl… obviously I make some pretty top of the line Momma milk!
